We were in An Hoa, Liberty Bridge, and surrounding area . I was blown off an amtrack returning from the bush when we hit a land mine. I woke up **[ta]**S.A. In Danang and lost all contact with my unit.His name is William Williams and he was from Newark New Jersey . He should have been a Corporal at that time.

I was with ECHO 2/5 from 9/1/70 - 2/71. Joined the company out on Liberty road. I can't remember the name of the hill we were on, but it was on the left about half-way to the bridge. Then we moved down to LZBaldy. Went up into the Que Son's three times. On the last trip we found a NVA hospital. Spent a couple week's blowing up medical supplys. Got hot chow flown in on Xmas day and it started raining as soon as the choppers left. It never stopped while we were there. Finally got out of there 1/3

I was a SGT 1st PLT E Co. This was my second tour. My first was with D 1/1, M 3/3 and F 2/3, AUG 65-SEP 66. I shipped out with D 1/1 aboard the USS Lenaway an APA Troop Transport. We made a beach landing at DaNang, then boarded 6Xs and headed to the old French fort west of Freedom Hill. I was 17 at that time and they were pulling us out of Nam. I was transfered to M 3/3 at the bulk fuel site near DaNang. They cauht you with me and five others and we were sent to the rock and joined up with F 2/3. DEC 65 we made a beach landing in Chu Lia. In between tours I was in 5th Recon, Camp Horno, Camp Pendelton. Then Marine Barracks Alameda, CA. Pissed of the COL and he sent my ass back to Nam.

21Feb67-21Sept67 Duty Bound and Memories of Vietnam

I am proud to have served with so many outstanding Marines during my tour of duty, Capts. Blessing and Kinder, Lt. Long, Sgts. Clark, Parker and Urrutia, Cpls. Curt Parsons and Gribbons, Jeff Eng, Muster, Jim Erickson, Richard Lawson, Leslie Sealy, Tully Ellis, Westover, Kimble, Medlin, Crone, and Dan "Shifty"Sciffbauer. We, the living, are duty bound to honor the memory and deeds of our fallen Marines, Lt. Bertolozzi, Larry Lewellen and Cruz. Cruz was a battalion engineer on a road sweep I was leading out of Liberty Bridge who was killed by a sniper in the same area as Lewellen, perhaps by the same sniper.

On the morning of 1Aug67, the simultaneous departures of the road sweeps went smoothly, as planned. The sweeps were to routinely clear the road of mines and booby traps to the midpoint connecting the two outposts, Golf Co. from An Hoa and Echo from Liberty Bridge. A half hour later, Echo Co. Marines heard the irruption of gunfire in the direction of An Hoa, followed shortly by a radio message to Sgt. Urrutia. We ran in the direction of the gunfire, hearing it die down to dispersed and intermittent shooting. We spread out as we neared the ambush site expecting hostile enemy action. All was quiet, too quiet, moving forward desperately looking for signs of life from the bullet riddled Marines. All thirteen were dead and after seeing their faces understood the intent of the intermittent shooting. The VC had swept through and murdered our wounded Marines with a fatal shot to the head as they fled. Among the dead were PFC Thomas Blystone and Lt. Paul Bertolozzi. Blystone was a tall, wiry Golf Co. Marine with a panther tattoo on his right forearm, and a member of my bootcamp squad. Lt. Bertolozzi was our executive officer on his way to Liberty Bridge to pay Echo Co. Marines. He lay on his back on the engineers"4-wheel supply mule where he had fallen. The payroll was intact in a steel ammo box next to his body undiscovered by the VC in their hasty get aw***

After the bodies, equipment and weapons were retrieved and loaded by battalion Marines and on their way back to An Hoa, Sgt. Urrutia ordered me and my fireteam to set up an ambush at the site and to stay put until I was relieved. We were left without a radio and after darkness fell made our way back to My Loc 2, when it had become obvious we had been forgotten.

Operations New Castle and Union I & II took place in the spring and summer of "67, with one of the outstanding actions of Union II for Echo 2/5 taking place on July 4th at the southeast end of Antenna Valley. We searched the west and north ends of the valley the previous two days for the enemy and failed to lure them out to fight. It was late afternoon when we encamped on a small, defensible knoll where we were treated to steak and ice cream by battalion via helicopter delivery to celebrate the holiday. Settling down to enjoy our one decent meal in a week, a burst of harassing enemy fire sent us scrambling for cover. Darkness fell and the tension was numbing, not knowing where or what type of attack would follow. Out of the stillness of the night, someone yelled out, "Look at the coal mine, it's getting hit! "The coal mine was a hilltop outpost, and the explosive blasts looked like a 4th of July fireworks show in the distance. The eye riveting display was cut short by Captain Blessing"s command, "Saddle up, we"re moving out! "The adrenalin charged force march undertaken on 4Jul67 in pitch black darkness to relieve the beleaguered Marines of Fox 2/5 at Nong Son is a feat etched in the collective memories of the Marines who were there, and exemplary of the go anywhere, anytime actions of Echo Co. 2/5 led by Captain Blessing.

On 8Aug67, I was ordered to lead a fireteam ambush near My Loc 2 after we had abandoned the outpost the previous week. While moving to a better position at the site, I tripped a booby trap. I was medevaced to DaNang, followed by treatment on the USS Sanctuary, surgeries and rehab at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, CA, and medically discharged on 28Ju***
